Some time had passed and little Shujaa was now a young cub, that was able to do things such as climb and play for a longer period of time. One day while out exploring, the young prince stumbled upon a canyon and started his decent downward. Once arriving he looked around. It was quite dry and barren. Figuring it would be best to get out of the heat, Shujaa padded over to lay on a rock under an acacia tree that still had a few leaves on its branches. "At least its not so bad down here..." he thought as he rested his head on his paws and closed his eyes.

Kayani liked the gorge. It was quiet, large, and the rocky sides gave her ample choices for places to hide and play in. She liked to come here to get away from the rest of the pride, to get away from the dwindling food and the overall brooding feel of the Pridelander lions under King Scar's rule. Kayani supposed she didn't have much of an opinion. Food was scarce, but she had never seen King Scar completly as the enemy. No one ever talked to her about that stuff, she she had decided to ignore it. Instead, she came to the gorge often to release her tension. But more often than not, her play sessions were turned to boring games alone with herself. Playmates were impossible to find. Any animals that might have once lived in the Pridelands were long gone. Cheetah cubs, leopard cubs, even the children of prey she might have been able to play with, were all gone. She spent more and more of her days alone amongst the gorge's rocks, laying by herself, tossing rocks against the sides of teh great canyon or staring at the sky. Today was one of those days. She had come early to the gorge. Lately, she had been forced to sneak away earlier and earlier to have any hope of getting away by herself. The lionesses had such a tight watch over her, now. She seemed to be the only cub any longer, anyways, and she hated how they were always looking after her. Kayani had grown up alone, and she liked to get away from adults. She had been in the gorge for a good amount of time, and now her exitement was running out. She lay on a rock several feet above the floor of the gorge, and sighed. She had visited the place where if you yell your echoe comes back really loudly. She had chased several lizards around, and she had searched the tiny caves that the rocks made. Nothing interested her. So she had consigned herself to lying on a rock, facing another boring day. Her tail hung over the side of the large boulder, and with a paw she picked at a loose pebble on the boulder's face, moving it around. She sighed, and finally flicked the pebble off. It bounced off down several rocks before hitting the ground far below. For no reason, Kayani leaned over to see if she could spot it. Instead, her blue-green eyes landed on something different. Down at the base of the gorge was a cub, about her age. Her heart skipped a beat, then she growled a cub-growl. Who was in her gorge? Deciding to play brave and scary, Kayani hopped down several rocks until she was standing on a flat rock that jjutted out over the ground. "What are you doing in my gorge?" she demanded, glaring down at the brown cub with the ebony head tuft.

Laying there on the rock Shujaa spotted the female cub. "You're gorge?" he scoffed. "This is my Daddy's gorge...so maybe I should be asking you what YOU are doing in it?" he narrowed his eyes and flicked his tail in slight irritation before jumping down to meet her head on.

"This is my gorge," Kayani argued. "I come here everyday. I never see your daddy here. So it's mine." She looked down at him. "Who are you, anyways?" she wrinkled her nose, giving him a look of distrust. She jumped down off her rock and stalked forward until she was almost nose-to-nose with him. Kayani had never reakky seen any other cubs around much. She was confined a lot by the lionesses, and she had never seen this little male before. But she also wasn't going to be put off by him, either.

"I'm Shujaa." he said puffing out his chest slightly, as he backed up a bit. "And like I said this is my Daddy's gorge, he's the king ya know, of course everybody knows that, unless you're stupid." he said with a smirk. Walking past her,he flicked his tail and continued onward deeper in the gorge, but he slowed down just a little to see if this new female would follow.

Kayani sniffed in indignation as he walked past her. "King?" she asked, turning to follow him. "Your daddy's the king? You know, if you're lying, you could be killed for it." Kayani didn't care much about kings or princes, so she didn't much beleive Shujaa that he was Scar's son. Neither had she ever seen him before. She had to admit, he was kind of cute, though.

"Yup.. the king, the best one ever t-" the cub was cut short when he stumbled upon a broken branch. Staring at it in awe he padded closer. "Wonder how that happened..." he said quietly sitting down and staring up at it.

Kayani rolled her eyes as Shujaa babbled about his father "the king". She still wasn't quite sure if he really was the son of Scar but... She almost ran into teh back of the cub when he stopped abruptly. "Hey, " she said. "Watch where you're-" She saw what he was looking at, though and stepped forward, seeing the lonely, dying tree with one branch broken off. She had seen teh tree before, but she didn't climb it because it hadn't looked safe. And she'd always stayed away from it anyways. It didn't feel....right. She suddeny felt cold, but shook it off. "It's probably nothing," she said. "This tree's beed dead for a while. Trust me. She stepped away from it, not feeling comfortable around it. She had never felt this way in the gorge before. "Let's go play somewhere else," she said.

"Ok.." the young prince replied as he turned his back on the tree, deciding that he would ask his father about it later once he arrived home. Trotting after his new friend he then ran ahead and stood in front of her. "So what are we gonna do?" he asked.

Kayani thought about it for a long moment, before deciding on something. She'd catch this cub at his own game. She knew what they'd do. "Let's go see your daddy," she said. "If he's the king, I bet he's cool. I want to see him." She glanced sideways at the cub, expecting to see him get all upset, because his father really wasn't the king, or he didn't know his father at all. AS she waited, she realized something. "Oh, I'm Kayani," she finally introduced herself.

"Ok.. come on I'll race ya back!" then he sprinted off towards Pride Rock. "Kayani...that's a nice na- what the heck am I thinking?! Girls are gross..." he thought as he sped along side her. "Dad! Mom!" Shujaa called out looking around. "Guess they arent here..." he shrugged.

Kayani raced after him, laughing. "I'll beat you!" she called exitedly. They reached pride rock and Shujaa called out for his parents. But no one answered. "Are yousure your dad's king?" Kayani asked again, eyebrow raised. It was beginning to become clear that she had been right- Shujaa was lying. He wanted her to think his father was King Scar, but it was really just a joke. She half-smiled, knowing he had made up the entire thing.

"No you didnt!" he replied. "I was so far ahead of you." he smirked while looking around for his father. "Mom? Have you seen Dad around?" Shujaa asked.

She looked down at Shujaa then to the young female beside him. With a quick glare at the small female, she turned back to her son, but shook her skull- No I haven't. Why do you need to know?
Her pelt was covered in dirt as she had been chasing meaningless things all day. As she had nothing better to do, she craned her neck down and whispered to her son- "Who's this young female? I don't think I've seen her before"
