"The hyenas are coming!"
That was enough for Ila. The lioness frowned, knowing those creatures should not be here. Though she was extremely loyal to Scar, she had never liked the filthy hyena beasts. She'd been overjoyed when they had keft them behind to be exiled, evena s they were exiled to the Outlands.
Why where they back?
"Come on, then," Ila said, leaping up from her resting place and charging across the dusty, dry Outlands. She hated this place, but it was her pride's home, and she would protect it, and her queen, and her queen's cubs, from attack.
She reached Zira soon enough, and saw the hyenas, as well.
"What's going on here?" she directing her attention to the hyenas. She saw Kovu cowering under his mother, but turned her full attention to the hyna trio.
"Queen Zira, what is happening?"

Zira saw Ila, and was greatly relieved. Normally she would not have called for Ila,, but in this case, Zira knew, no matter the past, that she could trust Ila for this, as she would fight to the death over the cubs.
"Ila, I figured you'd want to have a nice little reunion with your old friends," Zira sneered. She then took a fighting stance, ready to pounce. "Vitani! Kovu! Run, now!" Zira screamed with a growl. She waited to make sure the hyenas didn't try to run after them before lunging, and now she was not alone. Ila could easily cover her while she covered her cubs. She growled viciously deep from her throat, just daring the trio to try anything with her cubs. She was more than ready to rip their throats out.

As if on cue, Kovu's small body practically flew away from underneath Zira's much larger tawny frame and tried to make his way towards Ila, which proved to be quite difficult considering that the trio of hyenas nearby scared him out of his wits, but he continued to press onward.
Finally making it behind Ila, Kovu continued to run all the way home, scampering behind a large termite mound and laying down. Why on earth did he have to act so cowardly and be defended all the time? Staring back at the way he came, he hoped that this mess would all be over and done with so he could go back to just playing with Vitani or something else.

Ila glanced over her shoulder to see Kovu run like his tail was on fire back home. Despite the situation going on right in front of her nose, she still briefly shook her head. Kovu was a cub of good breeding, and had more than a bit of potential to be a true fighter. But for some reason, he was far, far from being the warrior she knew Zira dreamed of him being. Maybe she could fix that.
Later.
She turned green eyes back to their current enemies, and bared her fangs at the slobbering hyenas.
"What do you want?" she demanded. "Why are you hear, frightening our cubs, and why shouldn't we tear your throats out and leave your bodies for the vultures to chew on?"
