This was the water that he was so excited about? To be honest, it didn't look like much more than a mud puddle, but it was better than nothing. Leaning forward he took a small taste with his tongue and cringed at the taste that filled his mouth. It was disgusting!
"Mother? D..do we have to drink this? It's awful!" he told her as he stared up at her. He knew he should be grateful but he guaranteed that his mother or probably even Nuka wouldn't dare drink it. "Can we go over there for water?" The cub padded a few steps forward, staring at the unknown area, which just happened to be the Pridelands. "That place looks like they have lots of it."

Watching her precious son the entire time, she saw the face he made with the taste of the water and she shuttered at the thought of the future king having to live like this. However, she was his mother and it was still water, and he needed it to survive.
"Kovu!" Zira scolded. "You will drink this water, do you understand!?" Zira's eyes were glaring with impatience and it was obvious that she was upset at Kovu for an instant for him questioning her. After a few seconds, she relaxed and was calm again and she spoke gently to her son. "It is important for you to stay strong, my little prince."
Nearly as soon as she had calmed down, however, her rage was intesified as Kovu spoke of the water in the Pridelands. "Kovu, we shall return one day," Zira remarked vengefully, her words filled with hatred. "For now, however, you must know to never go there, especially alone. They think the Pridelands belong to them, and so they banished us to here. They are evil, and Simba must pay one day. That is your job. You will avenge Scar, my dear one, and take your place as the true king." Zira was filled with excitement at the thought of her son killing Simba, for he had killed Scar. She was so deep in her thoughts for a while that she didn't immediately notice that Vitani had still not drank of the water. When this realization came to her, she looked back at her daughter and seemingly snapped. "Vitani! Drink now! You are not any better than your brother. The both of you will appreciate learning to live this way, for you will become much stronger and smarter."

"But I already drank some Mother.." the young prince replied. His attention still somewhat focused on the lands across the border in the back of his mind. What was it like over there? Must be a lot better than what it was like over here, that was definitely for certain.
Kovu sat down next to Zira and peered up at her momentarily, his ears drooping slightly against the sides of his head, not really knowing how to, or in fact wanting to, respond to her before returning his gaze back towards Vitani. Was she seriously going to drink this stuff? He had already has his portion and Kovu certainly wasn't intending on having seconds.
Not wanting to drink the muddy liquid again, the cub climbed up onto a small rock and looked around, it seemed so boring around here. "I'm..I'm gonna go back.." he replied as he hopped down off the rock and started padding back in the direction towards home.

Vitani was very excited about the water, until she arrived at the muddy puddle. It was something she wouldn't drink from, after all she still had her pride. She made a grimaced sound before turning to her mother "Euggh." Vitani grimaced again, moving slowly towards it. After just a small sip she pulled away from the nasty tasting liquid.
She followed Kovu's gaze over the pridelands "They wont notice if a little of their water gone" she pointed out to her mother. Although she knew her mother was right, there was still a small chance two cubs could get in and out undetected. However she also knew her mother would be completely against this idea.

Zira ignored Kovu as he walked away. She wasn't pleased with having to tell the prince that he couldn't enter his own home. She hated that she couldn't let her daughter go, as well. There was nothing she could do about it just yet, though, and she knew that. She had to train her pride to be true fighters, none of them were ready to fight yet. They would train with Kovu, while he was being trained.
She turned to follow Kovu home as Vitani mentioned that the Pridelanders wouldn't notice if some of their water was gone. This made Zira upset again, as Vitani knew this was not the case. "Hush, Vitani! Do you want them to kill you? That is what they will do if you are caught! You are a child, you have no idea how to be quiet! Now get home!" Zira went past Vitani, knowing that she would follow, even though she had traits of her mother in her pride and having to do everything herself, she still wasn't disobedient to the one raising her.

But before the lioness could gather her cubs and herd them back home, the desert air filled with hyena voices.
Hee hee hee....
Their triangular silhouettes stalked like sharks amidst this barren sea of baked land.
"Going so soon?" Shenzi howled in a mockingly manner,
"Yeah, without even stopping to say hi." Banzai complained.
"It's been a long, long time, Queen Zira... Although, no, you're no longer our Queen. And these are no longer your lands." She sneered.
Although the Clan had an underground stream at the graveyard, they were capable to argue over a miserable puddle such as this. The Trio split up with intentions of circling the lioness, Ed laughing maniacally.

Kovu's body had completely frozen. In front of him stood 3 hyenas and very large ones at that. Disgusting, but large nonetheless. His dark fur began to shake for fear that he would be eaten in some form or another. "M..mother?"he squeaked as he laid there on the ground covering his eyes with his paws, peeking out every now and then to see if they had left yet. Nope, they were still there. Oh how he desperately wanted to reach up and claw them, sending them running away with their tails between their legs, but no. Here he was, still as cowardly as ever, hiding again from life's fears. Why on earth couldn't he have been born braver?

Vitani trotted to follow her mother until as soon as she caught up she was hit by the sound of hyhenas. She saw Kovu was cowering and made a low growling noise in her throat, as she bounded towards the hyhenas "Leave her alone!" she yelled.
Vitani knew full well she was a small creature in comparison to these large hyhenas, but none the less she was going to protect herself, her mother and her younger brother. "You dont scare us!" she said even if her brother was cowering. Vitani again growled and crouched ready to pounce.

Zira eyed the hyenas with disgrace, as she was still their queen. She growled deeply at them as she mumbled, "Back off." She stood her ground as she placed her paws closer to her son to comfort and protect him. She knew Vitani wasn't as scared as Kovu still was, but Kovu would change and she knew that. Until then, Vitani was her little sidekick for the most part.
"I am still your queen, Shenzi, and you will refer to me as nothing less," Zira proudly stated. "You can live in peace here or you can die just as Simba will," she sneered. Just then, Vitani came up growling and ready to strike, as Zira figured she would. She had to protect Kovu, and she couldn't turn her back on the hyenas, she knew that from experience of seeing other lions turn their backs. She had to think quickly, as she couldn't protect Kovu and take down the hyenas at the same time.
"Vitani! Go now, to Ila. Bring her back quickly. I am sure she would love to see her old friends," Zira ushered her daughter, and hoped at the same time the hyenas wouldn't be so smart as to figure out that she just wanted Ila there for help to fight them off.

Vitani straightened up and looked at her mother confused for a while "Is this a time for social gatherings?" she thought but it suddenly clicked what her mother had planned "Okay mother!" she responded. She darted off to find Ila.
Vitani had seen the lioness earlier in the day but surely she would have moved from that spot "Ila,Ila! Mother requests your assistance!" she called once out of the hyenas earshot. Vitani so hoped Ila was around because she knew, although her and her mother where good fighters, they could never take on three hyenas.
Vitani continued her calls to Ila as she ran through the Outlands.

Ila had never expected that Zira might send for her. After all, relations between her and her queen had not been well since Prince Shujaa's death.
So when she heard the voice of the queen's cub, Vitani, calling her name, Ila's ears shot up immediatly, and the green eyes of the dark brown lioness scanned the horizon. She spotted the cub immediatly and came to her.
"What is this?" she asked, eyebrows raised. "Your mother needs me?" Once upon a time she might have been Vitani's cubsitter. But now she distanced herself from her queen's children, as not to arise old memories and hate. She was overjoyed that Zira called for her once more, but kept her joy inside herself.

He didn't like these hyenas, not one single bit, but the young cub certainly did not want to look like he was a complete coward in front of his sister, even though he was. Kovu unsheathed his claws and with a trembling paw, kept his eyes squinted shut and reached out slashing in no particular direction.
"G..go away an..and leave us alone!" he mustered up to say. Surely that would be enough to scare the mangy trio away from them. Yeah that seemed to work, or at least he really hoped it would, though in the back of his mind he figured it wouldn't.

Zira growled under her breath to Kovu, as she did not want him to start the fight nor get hurt. The hyenas would have him for lunch if he got away from her, and she knew this, so she wrapped her paw around Kovu once more and pulled him back under her. "Kovu, my little prince, you must not lash out at Ila's friends. If you scare them away, Ila will not be able to see them," she winked at the hyenas to try to play it off more, trying to make it seem like she was proud of Kovu for being brave even though he shouldn't be fighting them, which wasn't the case at all. Even though she would never admit it, she was just a tad frightened, maybe moreso worried, about the situation she was in, and she had put her children in the line of danger. She anticipated the return of her daughter and the presence of Ila.
The hyenas were smart enough to know that if a lion was rogue, without their pride, they were defenseless for the majority, especially against more than one of their own. Zira was clever, though, and she had good wit, she only hoped these three hyenas weren't as smart as they appeared sometimes, for they were the most outstanding ones of the bunch she had known.

The dark cub suddenly felt his small body being pulled back by his mother's paw. "Their Ila's friends?" he questioned. If they were, why would she send them to scare his mother and sister? The whole setup was strange, at least to him.
"I wanna go home.." he muttered to himself out of pure fear. How on earth were they going to make it home in one piece? Ila hadn't arrived yet nor had Vitani. What were they supposed to do? Just sit there and chat for the time being? No. They had to do something about it. "Mother?" he piped up. "Couldn't you get them too?" he asked as he laid there beneath her staring at the trio, his body not shaking as badly as it had been before.

Vitani nodded frantically to Ila, "The hyenas are there! Vitani said, hoping that Ila would go and help. She wanted her little brother to be safe and her mother too because as fierce as the Zira was Vitani knew she cared " Come on! Lets go." and with that the young cub ran back to her mother and brother hoping Ila would follow. She was ready to defend her famliy almost immediatley growling at the hyhenas. She stood infront of both her mother and brother she wished Ila would help soon after all she was small.
