So far, the lionesses believe Scar is, in a very messed up way, the rightful lion King. However, they don't appreciate the presence of the hyenas, and they don't think he has been a good King at all.
Naturally, some lions don't want Scar's reign to continue forever. The leader of Scar's opposition, as of now, is Sarabi. But the lioness maintains a very clever diplomatic stance -- she opposes Scar indirectly, and tries to foil his plans underneath the table, respecting the hyenas even though she despises them, but respecting them as not to get herself and the others in trouble.
The hyenas, although they have not found any reason to dislike Sarabi apart from memories linking her to Mufasa, readily oppose her and the lionesses because of what Scar tells them. Originally, the lionesses were meant to be above the Clan, but Scar has never enforced this, thus the hyenas have risen above the lionesses and will bully them often -- and again, Scar hasn't done anything. The lionesses are unhappy about this, and some of them have wanted to leave, but their way was blocked by the hyenas.
Shenzi is the matriarch of the Clan. She is also friends with Scar since cubhood. Shenzi is afraid of Scar's temper, but it is mainly their friendship which keeps her working for him. Shenzi maintains the Clan under Scar's control. The Clan being the source of Scar's power, Scar prefers their favor over the lionesses, this is the reason for which the King nearly always allows the Clan to get its way. So far the Clan is grateful for being allowed in the Pridelands (Might not be so much now, but a year back it was a paradise!), and for being conceded decent treatment (they may not be considered equal to lions, but there is no equivalent to Mufasa or Ahadi to terrorize them).
I'm very interested to see what Nala's take on this will be, and the Friendly Five will also play a very important role; I'm predicting them to become hot-headed rebels that will cause both Sarabi and Scar a myriad headaches. Also, no Nala x Scar romances x: -is a married lion and all-.
The appearance of a teenage Simba later on is also a very interesting idea.
So far, only the hyena trio (Shenzi, Banzai and Ed) know the truth about Mufasa's death. And they haven't told anyone. Scar won't be totally unmasked until this plot arc:
Upon Simba's return (probably teenager and not adult like on the movie), Scar surely makes a comment that gets to Simba/Chumvi/Tojo's ears. Simba/Chumvi/Tojo begins suspecting, and goes to the hyenas for clues. He manages to pin Ed, and the hyena spills the beans over Mufasa's murder.
Then we get a "Murderer" sequence, where Simba/Chumvi/Tojo manages to get Scar far from the protection of the hyenas. Then Simba/Chumvi/Tojo tries to make Scar confess just like Scar did with Simba in the movie (where he makes Simba tell the lionesses he killed Mufasa). Scar does confess, but is saved by the hyenas.
Once he is rescued, Scar demands Ed's life for his betrayal (we assume he finds out somehow during the 'Murderer' sequence). But just before his execution can be carried on, Shenzi interferes crying "No!"
"Do you dare defy me?" Scar growls, but Shenzi does in fact dare. Scar trembles in realization of that the whole Clan just turned against him. However, in favor of their life-long friendship, Shenzi spares Scar's life, and instead only exiles he and his family "Run, Scar, and never come back."
The Royal Family and a few followers (the Outlanders) flee for their lives and settle down in the scorching Outlands.
Shenzi is now the one Queen over Priderock. However, she declares the territory as useless, and she and Clan moves elsewhere. This allows Simba/Chumvi/Tojo to take over, and thus order is restored.
Then we go play TLK II.
