Zira frowned at her son, a grim and dangerous look lurking into the depths of her dark soul. A growl formed on her lips, but very slowly drew into a tight smirk. She pawed around him, and dug her face against his skull. Her maw against the prince's ear, she whispered strange and alluring promises.
"We will teach you how to be a king." His mother said, demanding his absolute attention as she snuggled against the cub's warmth. "There is nothing else in life for you except the glory of taking succession after your father. You will not disappoint me, Kovu."
Zira lingered near him for a few more seconds, and slowly moved away. But remained close to Kovu, frightening the child into submission. He was her future; the destiny of Shuuja now belonged to him and she wouldn't see another one of her cubs lose that honor.

Kovu's body was scooped up by a large paw and placed down next to his mother. The cub winced slightly as she began to whisper into his ear and snuggled close, a little too close for Kovu's comfort. "B..but how?" He had no idea how he was exactly going to be taught how to be a king, plus he was too little at that.

The menace in her smirk smoothly transformed. Now tender towards her young cub, Zira laid next to him, comforting him motherly. Her nose dug deeply into his coat, the image of Shujaa immediately entered her mind as the lioness stared into her son's emerald eyes.
"You ask to many questions, young one." She replied, hushing him and the natural curious mind he had. "You're the chosen one, and you must follow your father's paw-steps."
Shujaa never questioned her authority, not as Kovu did. The sympathy in his heart must be destroyed, or he'll never reign nobly as Scar.
Twisting his cheek between two sharp black claws, Zira pinched a little harder so he would focus on her words. "You are my son, the heir to the Pridelands, and you will defend Scar's name. The pridelanders took our home, your father's kingdom and everything that belongs to us."
Speaking from the hollowness of her heart, Zira kept pinching the cheeks of her son as she continued to speak with him. "You don't want to fail your father now, do you?"

Kovu's face contorted to a wince as his mother grasped his cheeks and began to pinch quite hard, and to be honest it hurt...alot. He moved his head around to and fro trying his best to get out of her tight grip on him. "No but..ow! L..let go...please..." he protested and pleaded as he continued to try and pull away by trying to walk backwards away from Zira.

The further Kovu pulled and the more he struggled, the more his mother tightened her grasp. She dug her claws into his skin, but only enough to scare him and not scar. She squeezed a little deeper, but remained silent. The lioness would not allow him to disobey her nor to question her authority.
"Do you understand me?" Zira replied, refusing to let her son go.
She did not want him to die young and the entire purpose behind her abuse was to make him strong.

"Yes! LET GO!" he yelled as he raised a paw trying to push her massive clawed digits off his face having had enough of her "love" for the moment, all he wanted to do was at least breathe and of course escape.

The slender lioness lingered for a few seconds. Once her claws released her son from pinching him to death, she lowered her gaze and blinked patiently at Kovu's outburst.
"We are the only ones you can trust." Zira said. "You must never trust a Pride-Lander."
The queen remained still and defiant, pleased with the young cub's temper. One day, he will rule with pride. But until then, she will not allow disrespect and he must learn she is the only one he needs to rely on.
No one, absolutely no one will steal him away from her.

Kovu pouted slightly rubbing his right cheek as his emerald eyes stared up at his mother before storming off back outside only to end up laying down by a termite mound placing his head in his paws. "Why does Mother do that to me..." he mused as he laid there while flicking his tail on occasion. "And why did she tell me that stuff?" He decided to figure it all out later. Right now all he wanted to do was rest so he closed his eyes and began to fall asleep, but really couldn't.
Sighing as he got up, Kovu padded back inside the cave and peered from around the corner. "I'm sorry I did that Mother..". His words echoed into the cave. "It..just hurt a lot was all.." The young cub stayed hidden behind the corner just in case if Zira decided to act all motherly towards him again...and as luck would have it, Kovu spotted Nuka outside doing whatever it was that older brothers do. Scampering back out into the sunshine, the cub walked over to the teen and sat down behind him. "N..Nuka can I ask you something?" he said timidly.

Nuka lets out a sigh when the younger cub walks up to him. "What is it?" He asks irritably, turning his head to him.

"Has Mother ever acted well...weird around you when you were my age?" he asked as he stared up at the male. "She's been acting well..a little strange lately, saying stuff like I'm an heir or something.."

"...saying stuff like I'm an heir or something."
That sentence made Nuka's blood freeze. He wasn't the heir? He was older than that little....termite! Now how will he fulfill everything he ever wanted to do? The monument to Shujaa is now just a dream that would never come true! That very moment caused Nuka's sanity to begin to slip, moreso than it was when Shujaa passed. His thoughts became cloudier, his body language became more erratic, his eyes became crazed. This was all Simba's fault, taking Priderock back and causing his position of being the rightful heir to be stolen! "You the heir?" He lets out a crazed laugh. "What would make you a rightful king?"

Kovu stepped back a few steps as Nuka let out a crazed laugh. "Y..yeah she did...and I dunno...but it's what Mother said and Scar was there too...but he didn't say anything about it."

A crazed grin appears on the teen's face. "Scar was there too huh? I think I need to go talk with Mother." He says, standing and walking out of the cave with a slight skip in his step. "I'm the oldest! That means I'm the heir! The little termite doesn't know what he's talking about!" He says in a strange mix of glee and anger, his voice having a kind of giggle in it. Once he stops infront of his mother, he shows a wily grin before speaking. "So Kovu says he's the heir, tell me that termite's hit his head on a rock."

Zira's mind was concentrated on the work ahead. This would be the night they will feast until morning, with left overs to spare. Her sadistic eyes glowed at the horizon towards the Pride Rock, scheming while the false king slept on his comfy rock. Her huntresses were waiting and at Scar's command, they will infiltrate the Pride lands and return with their prey.
The sound of Nuka's whiny voice interrupted the lioness's train of thought. The flea-infested teen staggered over, complaining something about Kovu. Angered by his lack of respect, Zira snapped at her child impatiently and stared at Nuka with fierce and unpredictable eyes.
"What have you done now, Nuka?" Zira asked, obviously a rhetorical question. She knew of Nuka's incompetence, but was blind to her son's yearning for approval. "Didn't I ask to watch Kovu?"
Her older offspring remained a mystery to her. Aside from his angst tendencies, Nuka might have been a suitable heir considering his similarities with his father. But once Kovu appeared, almost identical to Shujaa, the acknowledgment of her older son had almost but disappeared.

Nuka shakes his head after listening to his mother. "Kovu's fine, he's back with everyone else. But I think he hit his head, he's saying he's the heir, when he's not even Scar's son!" he stated towards his mother's question as he sat down and began to rake the dirt slightly with his claws still silently fuming at the fact that the little termite would eventually become king...over HIM! It wasn't fair...HE was the first-born, HE had a higher right to become the ruler. He eyed his father as if he was expecting an answer from him too.
