"SHUJAA!" Kayani's cry was heartbreaking. Ila, her job finished by Zira, turned to see the cub tear across the ground between her and her best friend. Ignoring SZira and her scuffle with Rafiki, she fell beside her friend, hugging him. "Shujaa!" she whimpered. Tear coarsed down her cheeks. "Shujaa....don't die....please....." "Kayani..."Ila whispered, but the cub shook her head. "No..." she whimpered. "Shujaa...please..."

"But...I'm sleepy..." Shujaa told Kayani while slowly turning his head towards her as he was hugged, his chest rising and collapsing slowly. The cub let out a small weak cough as he spoke, with each passing moment Shujaa's life was slowly slipping away, his time was growing short. "I can sleep later." he smiled sleepily. "Come on, let's go play." he poked her and began to slowly run. "Tag! You're it!"

"Shujaa..."Kayani said, not running after him. She knew what was happening. She could see it in the cub's eyes. She'd seen it happen once before. A long time ago. She walked after him, stopped next to him. Gently, she wrapped a paw around him and hugged him. "Shuj, listen," she said. "I'm....I'm sorry. This is my fault."
Tojo looked up at the sun. It was getting lower in the sky. He looked down at the hyenas, his eyes urgent. "We have to get going," he said. "We have to get this medicine back to Shujaa. His time is running out." Without another word, Tojo began running down the side of the mountain, trying not to slip on the rocks.

Shujaa's body leaned forward into Kayani's as she hugged him close. "Huh? W..what are you talking about?"

"If I hadn't yelled at you, you never would have run away. And this never would have happened." Kayani pulled away and looked down at her paws. She couldn't bear seeing the spark of life leaving her friend's eyes. She had seen it once. She didn't want to relive that moment.

"I'll be ok, and I'm it...so you gotta run." he smiled weakly.

"I don't feel like it, Shujaa," Kayani said softly. "It's just...something's happening to you. And I've seen it before."

The young prince stood there for a few moments staring at Kayani. "Fine..if I'm not it...the you are." he laughed as he began to run as fast as he could away from his friend but it was too much, Shujaa fell as he ran, the pain in his chest increasing and burning, his eyes slowly closed. It was over. Shujaa had officially passed on to the other side. The cub's body laid there in the grass, the warmth leaving him quickly, in time his small body became still and cold.
(Now I gotta get ready to play Kovu XD)

"NO!" Kayani screamed as Shujaa ran from her. She saw his body collapse and she ran after. But she froze, unable to move another inch. She couldn't see her best friend anymore. She was seeing something else. A dream.
A younger Kayani laughed as she batted at her mother's tail. Around her, her siblings played too. And suddenly things became quiet. Too quiet. Then the roaring started. Time flashed past in a blur. Kayani saw her mother leap to her feet, trying to herd her cubs away. Other lions were around them, fighting, roaring, slashing. Kayani saw her mother attacked by a lion, and she rushed behind a rock and stayed there. Her siblings weren't with her. Time passed in a blur of motion, red with blood, wild with sound. Then all was silent. Kayani crawled out from behind her rock to see the lions she had once known, and many she didn't recognize, dead. She crawled forward, walking amongst the dead, lifeless bodies of her siblings. She then found the one she was looking for. Her mother. The small cub rubbed up against her mother's bloody body. "Momma..." she squeeked. The lioness's eyes, the same blue-green as Kayani's, blinked open to look at her daughter. But what she saw there scared her. The spark of life that had been so evident was fading. "Kayani..." her voice was weak and as soft as the wind. She reached a feeble paw towards her daughter, trying to touch her one last time. But the paw fell, and the last spark of life flickered and finally left her eyes. Her head fell to the ground and the lids closed, and Kayani knew that she was gone. She knew, even so young, that death had taken the spark of life from her mother. Heartbroken, she curled up beside her now-cold body and cried.
When the vision passed, she was curled beside Shujaa, like she had done after her mother had died. She looked at him, and knew he was gone. A gaping hole opened in her heart, and the sorrow was so deep she thought it would swallow her up. "No..."she whispered. She felt the sobs grip her body, and she let out a blood-curdling cry of "NO!" before burrying her face in her best friend's fur and sobbing sobs so violent they threatened to shake the cub apart.
Ila looked over, but knew there was nothing she could do. Respectfully, she slowly walked over to the cub's dead body, where Kayani sobbed violently. She lowered her head in reverence, tears dripping from her cheeks onto her paws. The prince was dead.

Under the tree, the lioness watched Rafiki disappear, her eyes wide with pain, wrath, confusion. She knew killing him would not bring Shujaa back. And that was the only reason for which she did not continue. Rafiki may have been agile, but he was no match for Zira.
Shooting him one last glare of hatred, the lioness padded towards her dead son, head low, eyes closed. She curled around him and watered him with her tears.
But then he spoke. Her ears perked at the faint sound.
"Shujaa!" The Queen sobbed. With eyes wide open she watched him try to get up and walk a few steps away.
It was like a dream, like an impossible fantasy. But deep within her, she knew something was wrong, terribly wrong.
Then he collapsed. Her suspects had been right. The Queen jumped on her feet, roaring a "NO!" in unison with Kayani. She could not bear the loss of her son, not twice.
Blinded by the pain and rage, Zira leaped towards her son, with a paw attempting to bat Kayani away. She saw in his green eyes the leave of his soul.
Zira roared, and the savanna shook.
"GO AWAY!" She howled, snapping her jaws as a threat to Kayani and whirling about as if about to pounce on Ila.

Kayani was pushed away from Shujaa by Zira. She didn't even care enough to move back to her friend's body. She stayed where she had fallen, crumpled into a ball, shaking, sobbing. Ila stepped back, startled, as Zira turned on her. She was heartbroken at Shujaa's death, but it wasn't her fault. "My queen," she said. "I'm..I'm sorry. Truly I am." She looked down at the dead body of the cub and then at Kayani. But there was nothing she could say.

Zira was not known for her anger management skills. Ila should have taken the chance when she could.
Fueled by indescribable anger, hurt as if her soul had been ground to dust by a great hammer, the Queen attacked. She leaped at the lioness and attempted to pin her down.

Ila cried out as she fell beneath her queen's paws. She knew she could not fight Zira. She was a cubsitter, not a warrior. And she would never raise a claw against her queen. She couldn't. "My queen!" she gasped, knowing Zira would kill her then and there. She could see the madness in her eyes.
Kayani tears cleared slightly, and she barely noticed the scuffle going on in front of her. She didn't care, and tried to turn away. But somehow she couldn't tear her eyes away. Memory flashed in her mind. Her mother, locked in combat with another lioness the one who had taken her life. JJust like Zira was doing now. She looked at Shujaa's body. What would he have wanted? One had already died today. And it was her fault. Ila would die as well, and it would be her fault, too. Because she knew who realy had killed Shujaa. She struggled to stand, and turned to look at the two struggling lionesses with eyes that held a new flame of angerand pain. No innocent childish spark was in those cub eyes anymore. Her innocence was gone. Never to return. "Stop it," she hissed, voice low and commanding. "Zira, leave her. I killed Shujaa. Me. Not her. It's my fault."

Zira's eyes were wide and overtook by madness. Her nose wrinkled into many little ridges and her fangs bared. She would kill her. That was it.
Then the little cub spoke, and the Queen turned her head. She looked as terrified as she was furious, completely out of herself, and in shape like to believe her words.
Slowly, she turned about, forgetting about Ila. Her head was low, ears pinned, and fangs showing as she stalked towards Kayani, really to blame her and punish her as if her words of confusion had been true.
Just then a third shape appeared in the scene. The dark shape of King Scar emerged from the bushes. Zira stopped on her tracks.

Ila rolled up. "Kayani," she whispered urgently, seeing Scar's shadow. 'Kayani, come with me." Kayani ignored Ila. She looked at Zira. A sudden, mad smile spread over her lips. She looked like she was going laugh right in the lioness's face. 'What are you going to do to me? Kill me?" she taunted. The smile faded, replaced by eyes filled with a hreatwrenching sorrow. "My only friend is dead! And it's my fault! You think I don't want to die? You think I'm happy that's he's gone? You think I'm glad that the only one who ever really accepted me is gone forever? Well? Do you? What are you going to do to me really? Kill me? You'd be doing me a favor!" The mad smile burst onto her lips again and this time she did laugh. But her eyeswere still filled with that sorrow. "Do it! Kill me! Right now! DO IT!" "Kayani!" Ila yelled at her, but Kayani refused to move. She stared Zira in the eyes, waiting.
