A gentle wind sprung up off the gently rippling waters, which caught and held the light of the single moon above. Tojo sat on the bank of the ever-shrinking watering hole, his blue eyes gazing out onto its mostly calm surface. The ripples that disturbed it were mostly small tonight. It almost mirrored how he was feeling. He was waiting for Nala, a lioness whom he had admired ever since Scar had taken his palce as king. But he had always been to afraid to speak to her, and had always given the excuse that he wanted her to get over her best friend, Prince Simba's, death before he really asked her anything. But that morning he had finally asked. After finding her and Bakari in the gorge, Tojo had asked the lovely lioness if she would meet him by the watering hole that night. And now that he was sitting there, he found that most of his fears, his nervousness and his anxiety were only mere ripples now. He took a deep breath, waiting for her to make her appearence.

The young lioness was getting closer to the watering hole. First stopping to get a drink that she had wanted for sometime, the long travel made her thirsty. She finally came to the edge dipping down and took a few sips with the help of her tounge. As her tounge touched the water, ripples went forth and seemed to disappear out much further in the watering hole.
After her thirst was quentched, she looked around wondering if she would spot Tojo. Wondering if she had gotten here early or not. She sighed not seeming to find the older lion at first. However smelling the air, she picked up his scent. Still fresh. A small bit of relief came to her face as she began to follow it, after climbing through the rugged rock and dusty land, she found him at last.
"Surprise." She managed to say, though she hadn't exactly been steathly on the way up with the clatter of rocks.

Tojo heard the clattering of rocks behind him, and turn, his heart leaping in his chest. He wasn't sure who he'd see. But fortunatly, it was Nala. HIs heart settled and he smiled at her. "Hello," he said, walking up to her. "I'm so glad its you. I was worried it might be a hyena or something." He realized what he had said and quickly added, "Not that they'll be interfering with us tonight, but I never know when one might pop out of no where and have a message for me from Scar." He sighed and sat down. Being Scar's assistant was a hard job, but it did keep him in the pride. But he shook his mane to clear his head and focused on what was happening tonight. For the first time ever, he was going to be able to talk to Nala. Really talk to her. Like he'd always wanted to. But now that he sat there with her, he wasn't sure what to say. "It's a gorgeous night tonight," he tried. "The stars are so pretty."

Nala nodded as she sat down beside the male lion as she listened. Before responding to what he'd say, she looked up noticing the stars around them in the sky. The nights she noticed had been somewhat cooler than they had been in the day. It was at least a bit relaxing than suffering from the scorching sun.
"Yes it's these kind of nights that make things enjoyable around here." She agreed and then looked back to Tojo.
He seemed nervous, she noticed, especially around her. Or was it just female lions in general? She shook the idea away, and looked back up at the Stars. "I wonder if Mufasa is watching us. I heard older lions say that the kings of the past watch us from these stars." She said looking back up at the landscape.

Tojo looked up at the stars, hearing what Nala said. He rmembered the lessons they had receivved as cubs all about the great kings of the past and the circle of life. As a cub, they had seemed almost acceptable. As an adolescent, and after all he'd seen, he had no more real faith in the old stories. "Truthfully," he said softly. "I gave up on the great kings after King Mufasa and Prince Simba's death. If there is anyone out there, looking over us, they're doing a horrible job of it." He knew it wasn't the best way to start a date, especially with the lioness he had always dreamed of falling in love with. But he also knew that he had to be frank with her. He couldn't hide things if he wanted them to have a relationship. And this was one of those things that she needed to know. And he didn't wat to pretend, even for her sake, that he still beleived the old tales of the great kings looking over them. As far as Tojo was concerned, if there were any great kings looking over them, they were as silent as the stars.

"I always thought they were." Nala said feeling a bid saddend by what Tojo had to say. She always thought someone was looking out after them even in the darkest times. "Even when I was in danger with the former king it seemed like they were watching me. I certainly hope it's still true to day." She said looking back down at the watering whole. Remembering when this was a wonderful paradise where cubs could relax and play without most fears.
Then the area began to dry up, the foliage disappeared, and the animal heards began to move out. She remembered once Mufasa had told her something long ago that perhaps cheered her up after the inncodent she had in the beginning with the hyenas. But it seemed so long ago that it disappeared from her memories.
"...Maybe it was a mistake coming here." She felt her self blurt out as she searched through her memories for an answer why she would say this. Did she still love Simba? She couldn't exactly tell. But she wasn't entirely sure on this other male also. It baffled her just to think about it.

Tojo blinked, startled by her sudden outburst. Was it the thing about the great kings? Maybe he shouldn't have been so frank with her. So many beleived in the old tales of teh Great Kings of the Past. "Nala," he said, standing. "I...I didn't mean it like that. Look, I'm sorry if I scared you. I don't want it to seem like I'm criticizing you. I just...don't beleive them anymore. I'm sorry...I..." He trailed off, feeling uncertain of what he was doing. He wantefd to hit himself. He was so dumb! He was making it worse now. "Nala, I...." he startted, but wasn't sure what to say. "I....really just want to be with you..." He looked away, his face feeling hot with embaressment. As if what he'd said earlier wasn't bad enough, now he'd told her that? He really had no idea how to deal with this whole crush buisness.

"I guess I don't know..." Nala managed to say, she paused for what seemed like an eternity at first. However she managed to speak after finding the right words. "I never thought I'd have a mate after Simba so I was usually by my lonesome or with my mother." She added as she thought about their fast past. It seemed to hold many memories, but it never lasted long.
She said looking back at him with a bit of a saddened look in her eyes. "If anyone should take the blame it should be me." She murmured softly as her gaze fell back to the dusty ground. She spotted her paw prints that she left in the dirt just moments before and as well as Tojo's.

Tojo swallowed, not sure what to say. He wanted to give Nala a while to get over Simba's death, but then again he thought he had given her enough. He just wanted to be with her.
"I don't want to push you," he said. "I know it was ahrd loosing Simba. I miss him too. Never think I don't. He was a great friend." He walked forward and touched her gently on the shoulder. "But I think maybe.....and don't take this the wrong way....maybe it's time to move on. Scar's king, Nala. And we have to accept that. We have to look at the present and want to change the future. You can't change the past." He sighed, not sure how Nala would react to what he'd said. He'd told himself these very words a long time ago, his first night alone after his mother had left the pride for good. He had also told himself this when he had decided to take Scar's proffered position as assistant. He had to strive to make things better now and in the future, not cling to the past. It wouldn't make things any better. "I don't want to push you into anything," he whispered to her. "But I do...I have....loved you for a while. Just give me a chance. Please. I want to help you." His blue eyes looked imploringly into her green ones as he begged for her to accept him for who he was. No, he wasn't Simba. But Simba was dead, and never coming back. She needed to move on. He wanted her to move on.

Something deep in side her told her that Simba was still around, she wasn't sure what this exactly was that was telling her this reason. She tried ignoring it first, but she found herself repeatedly going to the gorge. The last time she went there was not just to clear her head but to think about certain things also. However she'd worry about that feeling another day, the best thing she could do now was not worry about Simba. "Alright." She said softly as she felt Tojo's fur touch her own. "I'll try."
She seemed to feel a bit better after she thought things through. For what the great kings had in mind for them was still unknown to them all. What exactly where they planning for them? she wondered. Or perhaps they were on Tojo's side of not listening to the pride as they suffered this fate. But she had to accept the one thing that deep down she entirely disliked, Scar was king. Simba and Mufasa were not. Especially those hyenas, it went against everything they were taught. They were not meant to be together.
Nala wondered just how long the tenison would fade as they were together. Or would it remain straining the two groups to hatred. "Let's just try talking about something else, that will help." She said looking back up at him.

Tojo thought for a minute, then got an idea. A smile broke over his face as he stepped into the genly waving water in front of them. "I have an idea," he said, turning to look at her. "Why don't we do something else?" Before she had a chance to respond, Tojo swept a paw full of water towards her, then bounded away with a laugh. He crouched down, inviting her to join him in the cool pond. Helaughed, waiting for her to join him.

"Heay." Nala said stubbornly as the water hit her clean fur. She shook what she could off but realised that this was more than a game. She crouched down a bit low like she was in a hunting position, waiting for the right moment to strike. "You do realise your messing with a huntress." She added as she lept up, attempting a playful pounce. As her paws landed it seemed that the water went in every direction, but it only helped to cool them off.

Tojo leaped away as Nala splashed into the water, but the wave overtook him and he was soaked. Laughing, he leaped back to his feet and ran past her, causing a spray of water to fly in her direction. The coolness of the water felt so good on a night like tonight. Even in the dark, the heat of the savanna was still evident. It was nice to not only releive the tension of the heat, but also to releive the general tension of life. Finally, in what seemed liked such a long time, Tojo was having fun.

Nala couldn't remember a time like this when she was growing up through her teenage years as a lion. The only real fun she had was with Simba. It however brought back good memories instead of the terrible past that they all suffered from. Perhaps, that's what she realised. Was to keep the good memories alive, not suffer on how bad the past was, it would only make her feel worse. Though now she wanted to have some fun, it was unexpected but it made her feel better. She tried to dodge the water that Tojo splashed back at her, but it hit her in the face. Her fur was drenched, but she didn't mind at all. "If it's a water fight you want, and it's what you'll get." she said as she tried to kick more of the water back at the male.

Like Nala, it had seemed to Tojo that he hadn't had fun like this since the rise of Scar as king. He'd been a cub then, like Nala and Simba, but once Scar had come to power, most of his childhood had been cut short. The tragedy, the hard times, the fear, had made him grow up faster, and his mother's abandoment had forced him to become independant. At a time in his life when he should be slowly learning how to become an adult and enjoying the celebrations of entering adulthood, he was forced to work constantly for Scar and think a lot of the time about the death of either himself, his home, or his friends. But now, he could have fun. It almost felt like he was going back to the childhood he had missed out on. As Nala ran at him Tojo laughed and sprung back. He reached up to splash her again, but he tripped on a rock in the water, and his paw came down, draggin her down into the cool water with him, as he laughed all the way.
